70. Dress Rehearsal

It is not enough

To let go

Of you,

I must release

Your surrogate too.

I am a childless mother

With two mothers—

Both of you

In need

Of maternal comfort

And care.

Like a synchronized fate,

My neighbor, my friend

Has chosen now

To die

At home

With comfort care

Around the clock.

And me,

A part of her team.

A dress rehearsal—

For I love her

As I love you.

Honored and calm,

I feel anxious too;

Afraid of breaking down

Overwhelmed by letting go

Of both of you.
