Inheriting History

Your home

A museum

Art

And artifacts

History

Of things

Once useful

Became collectible

Until

They became

Undesirable

Collecting

Dust.

Juice glasses

The size of shot glasses

And tarnished silver;

Sets of formal china

That once serviced

A different set

Of standards.

The history

Of ancestry

And things

That simply are

A mystery.

We pull it out of cabinets

Where you

Squirreled it all away

―Your inheritance

Intended

To be ours

Some distant day.

A currency

Devalued

By time

And practicality―

If not

For sentimentality

I’d simply walk away.

Instead,

I choose a symbol

Here and there

To remind me

I am still the heir

To a long line

Of family

That cared

For etiquette

Beauty

And things best described

As delicate.
