Only Love

I hold my mother

And weep.

She cries like a child.

She wants her mother;

She wants to go home.

Why won’t I take her?

She is home.

I lift her

In and out

Of cars

And chairs;

Change soiled diapers

And bathe her.

Berated

For imagined wrongs

I smile

And say

I love you.

Remembered,

Then forgotten—

I answer

To any name.

Restless

And distracted

We drift

From doing nothing,

To doing nothing.

I practice patience;

Learn acceptance;

Experience peace.

Days creep

Full of nothing,

And everything—

Only Love matters.
